A Virginia car accident on Interstate 64 on September 25 has claimed the lives of two innocent victims.

According to Corinne Geller with the Virginia State Police, the police responded to a crash in the eastbound lanes of I-64 just west of Indian River Road. The accident took place just before 7 p.m.

The accident occurred as a pickup was traveling westbound on the interstate. The vehicle crossed over a grassy median and began to slide. The truck slid across the eastbound lanes before colliding with a 1994 Hyundai sedan that was unable to avoid the truck.

The driver of the Hyundai died at the scene of the accident. She was identified as Sandra D. Amaya, 31, of Virginia Beach. Her passenger, Sophia Lopez, age 12, also died at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the pickup was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he was treated with life-threatening injuries.

Those who knew Amaya and Lopez were saddened by their passing.

"I just cried. I felt so sad, especially for a little child that age to just pass away like that. And her mom, I just seen her yesterday. She was just a friendly person. She was outgoing, you know, always at the beach," Ward said.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation, and charges are pending against the driver of the truck, according to Geller.

The Norfolk law team at Tavvs Fletcher is saddened by this tragic event, and sends its condolences to the family and friends of the two victims.
