Involved in an Accident? Learn the Signs of a Traumatic Brain Injury.

One of the most serious types of injuries that can occur in an accident—a motorcycle wreck on Monticello Avenue or a slip and fall accident at MacArthur Center—is a traumatic brain injury (TBI). A TBI, caused by a bump or blow to the head, disrupts normal brain function and can cause long-term physical and mental complications. It is a serious problem in the United States. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries occur each year.

Those who suffer from a TBI may find it difficult to function—even routine tasks may be difficult or even impossible to complete. As a result, the victim may be unable to work, suffering severe financial hardship due to the loss of income and ongoing medical bills.

Following are some of the symptoms of a TBI:

  • Vomiting – After a blow to the head, you may feel nauseated and vomit. However, if you vomit more than once or twice, you should seek medical care right away.
  • Pain – Pain is a common factor for those who have suffered from a TBI. The pain is usually severe and can be located in the head, neck or back.
  • Fatigue – It is important to try to stay awake after a serious blow to the head. Those with a TBI may be overcome with sleepiness and find it nearly impossible to stay awake.
  • Inability to focus – Reading or remaining on task may be difficult after a TBI. This can be frustrating for the victim.
  • Loss of balance – Motor skills are often affected by a TBI, affecting the ability to walk, run or stand.
