Too often, reckless driving results in serious property damage, life-threatening or fatal injury, and emotional trauma. Here are a few important things you should know about reckless driving.

Reckless Driving Defined

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 32,675 died on US roadways in 2014. Many of these deaths could have been prevented, and reckless driving fatalities can, too. The following are a few common examples of reckless driving:

  • Speeding. Because a driver is able to control her speed, traveling above the speed limit is considered reckless driving. Reckless speeders often weave in and out of traffic or tailgate other drivers in an attempt to rush them. This creates many opportunities for serious accidents, especially on roads where the speed limits are higher.

  • Driving Under the Influence. No one should ever make the choice to drive after drinking or consuming prescription or recreational drugs. However, many people do—and cause serious accidents. Drivers under the influence often drive too slowly, drift in and out of lanes, and have less reaction time to obstacles.

  • Distracted Driving. Serious accidents can occur when even one person chooses to tinker with their cell phone, eat, or apply makeup while driving. These behaviors take mental, digital, and visual attention away from the act of driving, which risks the safety of the distracted driver and those on the road with him.

  • Road Rage. Unfortunately, some drivers on our roadways suffer from serious anger issues, and sometimes, this leads to road rage. Enraged drivers willfully put other drivers in danger by tailgating, flashing lights, weaving in and out of traffic, and attempting to verbally engage other drivers or get them to pull over. These behaviors heighten an already stressful environment, sometimes leading to serious accidents.

If you notice a motorist displaying any of these behaviors, avoid them as much as you can, even if you have to pull off the road.
